Scholarships and Awards (Applicable to Senior School only)

Scholarships are awarded on merit, irrespective of financial means. Offers are made based upon performance in Entrance Examinations (for academic scholarships) or outstanding ability demonstrated in disciplines such as music and sport. The maximum value of a scholarship is 5% of annual fees.

11+ Academic Scholarships

Each year, we are able to offer academic scholarships to pupils starting in Year 7. These scholarships will be worth up to 5% of annual fees throughout a girl’s school career and are not means tested. Everyone who sits the entrance examination is eligible to receive a scholarship and it is possible to be awarded a scholarship and a Founders’ Award. There are up to two 11+ scholarships available to girls transferring from our own Junior School and up to a further two for girls joining us from other schools. Offers are made based on the results of the Entrance Examination and a special application is not needed.

13+ Scholarships

Academic scholarships are also available for 13+ entry. Pupils will register their interest via the registration form by the end of the Autumn Term and sit the school’s Entrance Examination in the Spring Term, prior to the year of entry. Following the examination, short-listed applicants will be invited to the school for an interview. There are up to two 13+ academic scholarships worth a maximum of 5% of annual fees throughout a girl’s school career and they are not means tested.

Sixth Form Scholarships

At 16+ we are able to offer Sixth Form academic scholarships to girls who demonstrate outstanding academic potential or excel in particular areas. We also offer Sixth Form Scholarships in Art, Drama and Sport to girls who excel in these areas of school life.

These scholarships are worth up to 5% of annual fees for the two years of Sixth Form and are awarded following special application and a selection procedure.  Applications must be submitted by the end of the Autumn Term and selection takes place in late January or early February.

Flourish in a top performing Sixth Form with the help of an HSBC Scholarship

Portsmouth High School is pleased to offer scholarships sponsored by HSBC in partnership with the GDST. These are for girls looking to enter the school’s highly sought after Sixth Form.

These prestigious annual awards are available to academically promising girls who are currently being educated in the maintained sector. Applicants will be required to sit the Sixth Form scholarship examination.

In addition, applicants must meet the criteria of the Girls’ Day School Trust for a means tested bursary. Funding is linked to a bursary application and up to 100% of the full fees is available.

Successful applicants are expected to attend an HSBC award ceremony in London held in October for which a travel allowance is available. There is also a clothing allowance for essential items required in the Sixth Form such as a sports kit.

HSBC scholarship applications should be submitted by the end of November prior to entry in the following September.

Music Scholarships

We usually award three scholarships, one each at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Candidates should have achieved a minimum equivalent to grade 5 at 11+, grade 6 at 13+ and grade 7 at 16+ by the time they join the School. Music scholarships are worth up to 5% of annual fees with an understanding that some of this will be used towards internal tuition on one instrument (or voice). Applications must be submitted by the end of the Autumn Term.  Auditions for these awards will be held in the February preceding the new school year. Further details and an application form are available from our Admissions Registrar. Scholars will be expected to play a full part in the musical life of the school.

Bursaries (means tested)

The GDST is committed to broadening access to the brightest but most financially disadvantaged girls. Bursaries and scholarships are available to any pupil aged 11 and over and most scholarships and bursaries are awarded pre-entry either for Year 7 or on direct entry to the Sixth Form.

Bursaries are awarded only to pupils in the top 50% of performance in the Entrance Examinations. All bursaries are means tested and their value is related to the income and financial resources of the pupil’s family. The maximum value of a bursary can be the full published fees.

We aim to assist as many families qualifying for bursaries as possible; however, given the demand, we are not usually able to offer support to all of those qualifying.

Bursary application forms are available from our Admissions Registrar, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  or call 023 9282 6714.

Please note that all our scholarships and bursaries are dependent upon satisfactory work, progress, behaviour and attendance and can be withdrawn.

If you are awarded a bursary you will be asked to send details of your income each year. Your bursary allocation may rise or fall, in line with any change of circumstances.
