Denise Black - TV and theatre actress
Denise was head girl at Portsmouth High in 1975. She has enjoyed TV fame in Coronation Street (as Denise Osborne, from 1992 to 1996), The Bill, A Touch of Frost, Dangerfield and other shows. Her TV debut was in an episode of Casualty in 1990.
On her official website, Denise writes, "So I'm a Pompey girl, born Denise Nixon on 3.6.58 to Stella (a bank teller) and Don (an electrician in the Navy). I inherited his wanderlust and spent every moment I could sailing when not in school at Portsmouth High. From there I went straight on to University of London to study psychology cos I'm curious about what makes us tick. That's where I fell in love with acting."
Much of Denise's career has been dominated by theatre. She started out at Sheffield's famous Crucible theatre and, after she received her equity card in 1980, performed Shakespeare plays around the world with the Actors Touring Company.
Denise recently enjoyed a return to her home town with an appearance in Denise Black's Loose Screw at Southsea's Cellars in Eastney.
She recently paid a visit to the school to share stories with and give inspiration to sixth form drama students.
