Founded in 1882, the school is currently located on split sites close to each other

The Nursery and Junior School are set in spacious grounds along Kent Road
The centre of the Junior School is a Grade II listed building which is affectionately known as ‘Dovercourt’. The Year 6 classroom is on the ground floor in the heart of the school.
Nursery, Reception Class, Year 1 and Year 2
Inside the extensive walled grounds is the award-winning Early Years’ building which is home to our Nursery School, Reception Class, Year 1 and Year 2. There is a dedicated outdoor play space for nursery children with a safety surface and sun canopy.
Modern classrooms for Years 3, 4 and 5
Modern Key Stage 2 classrooms (for Years 3, 4 and 5) are bright and spacious.
Discovery Laboratory at Portsmouth High Junior School
The Discovery Laboratory hosts science and design technology lessons.
Art, ICT, a library and classrooms
There is also an art room, a multi-purpose hall, an ICT suite, a library and classrooms. Outside are tennis courts and a lawned area for sports and activities.
The outdoor classsroom and space for imaginative play
The extensive gardens are a real ‘jewel in the crown’ and are unusually large for a city school. Girls play in the Temple Garden and Dell and have the freedom to run and explore.
Space to grow and discover the natural world...
There are raised beds for the children to grow flowers and harvest fruit and vegetables. The popular gardening club have their very own potting shed.
The Senior School is located further along Kent Road...
There are landscaped green areas for pupils to relax in during break times. The original 1882 building provides classrooms for English, mathematics and the humanities.
Other facilities in the main Senior School building...
The senior dining hall and café are situated on the ground floor of this building with the library, Head’s office and administration offices. Languages classrooms, a spacious ICT suite and the main hall and drama studio are also located in the original building.
The Bannell Centre at the Senior School
The ‘Bannell Centre’, just across the sports surface, is home to a sport England standard sports hall, a spacious art and design space, a design technology workshop, a food technology room and classroom accommodation.
The school has use of some of the best sports facilities in the local area, including co-ownership, with the University of Portsmouth, of a multi-use games area. This houses four floodlit courts and access to a synthetic turf pitch for hockey and football as well as a grass athletics track. The school also uses university sports halls and fitness suites. A swimming pool, synthetic turf pitch and athletics track are also hired from HMS Temeraire.
Specialist Science Department
Just across the road from the Senior School is a purpose-built science department housing seven laboratories and preparation rooms. All these laboratories have been recently refurbished and provide a state-of-the art teaching environment for science.
Sixth Form House
Sixth Form House is an original Thomas Ellis Owen building in the grounds of the Senior School. Last summer the interior underwent an extensive refurbishment providing a modern space for sixth formers to study and relax in.
