Entrance procedure | Portsmouth High School

Entrance procedure

Entrance procedures to Portsmouth High School depend on your daughter’s age. Main entry points in the school are 3+, 4+, 7+, 11+, 13+ and into the Sixth Form. However, we are happy to discuss entry at other points with prospective parents should places be available.

Entry into the Junior School (ages 3 to 11)
We are looking for academic potential and we want to know that any girl offered a place will be happy with us. All girls are assessed prior to entry. Our youngest pupils in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 come to school for an informal assessment on a one-to-one basis. All other girls attend for the day. In the morning they are assessed in English and mathematics. They then join their peer group for the rest of the day.

All these assessments are conducted with every effort to put the girls at their ease so that they can relax and have an enjoyable experience.

Entry into the Senior school at 11+ (Year 7)
Our Entrance Examinations are held on a Saturday in January. Prior to this we invite all candidates to attend an Activities Afternoon. They meet up with other girls sitting the exams, have lunch with our current Year 7 pupils and take part in a number of communication and team-building activities. The afternoon allows us to observe and assess the candidates informally, whilst enabling them to become familiar with the surroundings and make friends, leaving them more at ease for the Entrance Examination day itself.

Candidates for entry into Year 7 take an English paper of one hour. There is also a mathematical paper testing numerical skills and an ability to apply mathematical knowledge which will last for one hour. These papers are based on the National Curriculum and no special coaching is needed.

A reference will be requested from the current school. This reference is part of our entrance procedure. Sample papers for 11+ are available once your daughter is registered for an Entrance Examination.

If places are available, we are happy to assess your daughter for entry into the school at other times during the year.

Entry at 12+, 13+ and 14+ (Years 8, 9 and 10)
We ask all candidates to visit us on a Shadow Day and follow a timetable of lessons with their peers, which we arrange on an individual basis.

The day is scheduled prior to the Entrance Examinations and allows pupils to experience a normal working day in school and familiarise themselves with the surroundings ahead of the Entrance Examinations. Our Entrance Examination is held on a Saturday in January. We also invite candidates and their parents to a meeting with the Headmistress, to be arranged for a mutually convenient date.

Girls will be asked to sit papers in English and mathematics and a reference will be requested from the current school. Sample papers for 12+, 13+ and 14+ are available once your daughter is registered for an Entrance Examination.

If places are available, we are happy to assess your daughter for entry into the school at other times during the year.

Entry into the Sixth Form
We expect Sixth Form students to have obtained at least seven GCSE qualifications at grade B or above. Most subjects will require at least grade A as a prerequisite for A Level study.

Applicants are invited for interview, usually in the spring term, and an offer of a place is conditional on GCSE examination results. Interviews can be held at other times if necessary.
