Portsmouth High School GDST doubles national average of A* for girls

General -

There is much to celebrate today as Portsmouth High School GDST Sixth Formers excitedly received their A Level results marking yet another year of excellent academic and personal achievements for students at the school.

Girls achieved over 13% of A* grades almost doubling the national average of 7%.

There was a 100% pass rate this year and an impressive 44% of all grades at A Level were A*/A and 76% were A*- B.   All girls who sat Further Mathematics  achieved an A or above plus there were also outstanding results in Physics and Maths where all girls achieved 100% A*-B.  In Drama and Art all the girls achieved A*-B.

‘This year’s set of A Level results is a huge success story, said Headmistress Mrs Jane Prescott. ‘In the current highly competitive climate for university entrance, we are very pleased with the outstanding success of our students’ A Levels results, particularly in the STEM subjects of Mathematics and Science. All girls going to university in the autumn secured a place at their first choice university.  These results demonstrate that the School is continuously providing high quality education to girls in Portsmouth and the wider area and more importantly that students feel challenged and supported to achieve their very best.’

Mrs Jan Cresswell, Head of Portsmouth High Sixth Form added: ‘It is a joy to see how delighted the girls are with their amazing results.  There is a tremendous atmosphere within the Portsmouth High Sixth Form. The girls have a real determination to succeed and excellent working relationships with their teachers; it’s a winning combination.’

Holly Giles, 18, secured her place at Cambridge to read Natural Sciences with 3 A*s and an A. ‘I am so excited about going to Cambridge. It is going to be a wonderful opportunity.’ Her father, Dr Giles, from the University of Portsmouth, added: ‘We are delighted for Holly after the amazing amount of work she has put in over the last two years and the wonderful environment she has been in supporting her aspirations.’

Maddie Michell, 18, was ‘beyond excited and close to tears’ when she found out she had achieved 3 As to take her on to Leeds to study textile design. ‘I’ve been at Portsmouth High since Reception and have enjoyed every minute but am so excited to be going to Leeds to do something that I love.’

Kate McMurrugh, 18, achieved 2 A*s and an A securing her place to read Medicine at Birmingham: ‘I am so grateful to everyone at Portsmouth High School as I couldn’t have done this without them!’ Her mother, Mrs McMurrugh added: ‘I am so proud of Kate.  She has worked really hard and I am delighted it has paid off.’

All the girls who plan to go to university in September have secured a place at their universities of choice, another resounding success as the competition for top university places remains strong. Throughout the university application process sixth form tutors are on hand to give students one to one advice and support. A focus on monitoring and target setting, as well as specialist careers guidance, ensures every girl is on course to achieve her goals.

Headmistress Mrs Jane Prescott said, ‘The girls have given their best and have been rewarded with an outstanding set of results.  This takes hard work and determination and we are immensely proud of them. They all have bright futures to look forward to and we shall look forward to hearing about their successes in the years to come.’

For girls who are looking to apply to Sixth Form for September 2015, our main Open Morning will be on Saturday 4 October from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
