Portsmouth High School host ten visiting primary schools for annual Festival of Languages

General -

Portsmouth High School were delighted to host ten visiting primary schools for their third Festival of Languages.  The Festival is an opportunity for the Languages Department at Portsmouth High School to share their passion for languages and to celebrate some of the languages spoken by pupils in the school.  Senior School pupils joined specialist languages teachers in leading the sessions to teach a carousel of ten taster lessons ranging from Japanese, Hindi, German, Bengali, Farsi and Mandarin to Greek and Italian.

‘This event provided many opportunities,’ said Head of Languages, Miss Susie Humphreys.  ‘Opportunities for our pupils to get a chance to share their love of languages, opportunities for other schools to hear different languages spoken and an opportunity to showcase the joy of languages around the world.’

The event was aimed at pupils in Years 5 and 6 and the morning is designed to ignite a love of languages and also to celebrate the rich diversity of languages spoken by pupils in schools across the county.  Research shows that the best age to start learning a language is seven and this can help the brain to grow and develop.

‘I’ve been so impressed by how quickly the girls have picked up Russian,’ said Zarina Robson, 18, a pupil from Portsmouth High School.  Zarina, who gave taster lessons, has just been offered a place at Oxford to read Russian.

Mrs Stockton, from Oakwood School, added ‘Zarina was excellent in teaching Russian. It is wonderful that the girls have the chance to be exposed to other languages and the morning has been so much fun.’

‘Greek was epic’ said Asia Pietluch, 9, from Wimborne Junior School and Lucy Rogers, 9, from St Judes Primary School added: ‘I’ve realised how difficult it can be to learn different languages but lots of fun too.’
