Portsmouth High School Sixth Form raise over £9,000 for local charity

Sixth Form -

Portsmouth High School’s Head Girl team were delighted to officially hand over a cheque for £9,031.19 to the mental health charity, MIND, which was the Sixth Form’s chosen charity for 2014/15.

The Head Girl team spearheaded fundraising activities throughout the year to generate money and raise awareness of their chosen charity.

‘There are so many mental health illnesses that affect many of our lives, or our families lives,’ said Bria Grange, Deputy Head Girl responsible for charities.  ‘We wanted to educate the rest of the school about mental health so that hopefully we can help take away the stigma of people feeling ashamed of the suffering they are going through.  This will hopefully lead to early treatment and more awareness in the future.‘

MIND support people likely to develop mental health problems, to stay well.  It also empowers people who experience a mental health problem to make informed choices about how they live and recover.  The charity also ensures people get the right services and support at the right time to help their recovery and enable them to live with their mental health problem.

‘This amazing amount of money will go towards supporting a series of peer support groups across the city,’ said Angela Etherington, Trustee of Portsmouth Mind. ‘These are groups of people who can support each other and just be themselves.  The girls have done a tremendous amount this year in spreading the word about mental health and we thank them so much for that.’

The girls organised a Charity Week last November which culminated in a two night fashion show supported by many local shops and businesses.  They also hosted many fundraising activities throughout the year including a netball match versus their own staff and a match against Portsmouth Grammar’s First XV Rugby team.

‘We are thrilled to be presenting MIND with this amount of money and hope that it will really be able to make a different to many people’s lives,’ said Head Girl Ellie Webb.
