Girls enjoy Barbados sports tour

General -

During half-term senior pupils and staff swapped the cooler autumn days in the England for the sunshine and beaches of Barbados on an action-packed sports tour.

‘This was our third time in Barbados,’ said Mrs Sue Nelson, Senior Sports Teacher who accompanied the girls. ‘Our arrival found temperatures above 30C and the sun was well and truly shining. Even the locals were saying that it was particularly hot.’

The tour included hockey and netball matches against tough opposition. The first day of fixtures took place at the University of West Indies with the hockey players facing their first match in 32C against a UWI select team. This was the first of many tough matches for the squad.

The Netball teams also faced strong University opposition from the UWI Blackbirds. Scores from these games did not reflect the skill and determination of the Portsmouth High School girls.

More matches followed through the week in soaring temperatures but the Netball squad, made up from Year 11 and Lower Sixth, played well winning 31-2 against a young St Georges Ballers side. The Upper and Lower Sixth team then had a very close fought match against St Georges senior team.

Time off was also spent relaxing, with an Island Jeep Safari taking in historical and geographical sites of interest and a cultural trip to the Museum of Barbados near the Garrison in Bridgetown. On the final day, the girls enjoyed a Catamaran cruise round the west coast of the Island.

‘It was very evident that the girls had a great time and they made the most of the opportunity,’ said Mrs Nelson. ‘They have forged new and valuable friendships, found depths of strength and determination they had not known and challenged themselves in the name of sport.’
