Portsmouth High School annual Carol Service

General -

The girls, staff and parents of the junior and senior schools were joined by some familiar faces at Portsmouth High School’s annual Carol Service today.

Governors, former staff and alumnae were amongst the guests in the Cathedral of St Thomas, Old Portsmouth and enjoyed the festival of lessons and carols with a service led by school Governor and Canon of the Cathedral, Peter Leonard.

Girls from Year 5 to Year 13 read the lessons and there was beautiful singing from Cantabile, Senior Choir and the junior school.

Cantabile’s song, ‘A Nativity’, with music by Sir John Tavener, was sung from the organ loft and resounded wonderfully across the Cathedral.  Years 1-3 sang ‘Rocking Carol’ and Year 7 Choir sang ‘Carol of the drum’.  ‘Huron Indian Carol’ and ‘Hail, Holy Queen,’ were sung by Years 4-6 and the Senior Choir respectively.  A beautiful melody was also performed by the Symphonic Orchestra.

Mrs Trisha Ferris, an alumnae who left the school in 1952, returned with others from her year group.

‘It was such a beautiful service,’ she said.  ‘Mrs Prescott should be immensely proud of her school.  The service was so moving and actually brought tears to my eyes.’

The girls break up for the Christmas holidays today after a Christmas dinner and a Nativity performed by the staff to the girls.
