GDST Young Musician of the Year 2016

Senior School -

Two of Portsmouth High School’s talented Sixth Form music scholars represented the school in the GDST Young Musician of the Year 2016 competition, held at St John’s Smith Square in London, one of the country’s leading concert venues.

Abi Harindra (voice), 16, and Lucy Hayes (classical guitar), 17, each performed recitals for a distinguished panel of internationally acclaimed judges, including award-winning cellist and Oxford High School alumna, Jane Salmon, renowned pianist, Peter Hill, and conductor, Hilary Davan Wetton. The audience included all of the most outstanding musicians from around the Trust. Abi’s expressive singing of ‘Shy One’ was praised by members of the audience, and Lucy’s playing was a particular highlight for one of the guitar experts among the directors of music present. Both girls admired the talent demonstrated by their peers.

‘I have never heard anyone my age perform at such a high standard as some of those I have heard today,’ said Lucy.

The pair joined the rest of the group in performing the world premiere of Per Aspera ad Astra, which had been composed especially for the competition by Grace-Evangeline Mason, BBC Young Composer of the Year 2013.

Helen Fraser, Chief Executive of the GDST, said:

‘Music is such an important part of life in all GDST schools. It is wonderful to see so many young people showcasing their talents at this prestigious event in such a magnificent venue. All our schools encourage young people to develop an appreciation for music early in life and I look forward to hearing more from these girls in the future.’

Lucy and Abi will each be featured soloists at the school’s prestigious Gala Concert on Wednesday 9 March. For tickets please contact l.webb@por.gdst.net
