Gymnastics success for Maisie at the GDST Sport Rally
Senior School -
As part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, girls at Portsmouth High School have many opportunities to compete in sport against our 24 sister schools and 2 academies of the GDST.
Sport and activity play an important role in developing confidence, resilience and leadership and are an important element of the curriculum across GDST schools. Through the GDST Sports Association, athletes and teams are brought together in a range of sports throughout the year to both train and compete.
A GDST Rally was held recently at Bromley High School and Portsmouth High School competed in gymnastics, cross country and netball. Our congratulations go to Maisie Lloyd Jones in Year 8 who won both the floor and combined floor and vault competitions against tough competition from girls across the GDST schools. Her team mates Macy Moss, Isabelle Clarke and Jemima Haslam also performed well coming 10th out of 17 entrants.
Maisie said “”It was my first gymnastics competition representing Portsmouth High School and it was interesting to see the differences between this competition and others I have been in. I am very pleased to have won and had a great day meeting so many other gymnasts from across the GDST”.
In the Cross Country event Bea Oliver from Year 6 was placed 25th out of 133 runners and Jessie Balch from Year 7 was placed 16th out of 108. In the Years 8 and 9 event Mia Billins came 6th out of 106 and in the senior event Flo Smith came 20th out of 49.
In the netball competition the senior team beat 7 of the other Trust schools to finish joint 2nd in their pool and just missed out on goal difference from progressing to the semi-finals. The girls played brilliantly as a team.
Portsmouth High School girls are very much looking forward to competing in the next GDST competition which is the athletics tournament in June and, later in the same month, the GDST tennis, rounders and golf.
