Portsmouth High School girls take part in Create & Cook Bake Off heat

Senior School -

Portsmouth High School girls from Years  8 and 9 enjoyed an exciting Create & Cook Bake Off heat where they had to design a two course summer menu supported by a story about their inspiration.

Fit2cook food education runs The Create & Cook Competition giving budding young cooks the opportunity to create their own menus inspired by the produce grown and produced around them.  As well as nurturing young talent and developing cookery skills, The Create & Cook Competition challenges young people to explore the key issues of sustainability, seasonality and animal welfare.

Twenty eight girls registered to take part and six winning pairs were invited to cook in the bake off.

Jessica Norris and Marcy Lea, both 14, took inspiration for the recipes from summer picnics.  Their main course recipe was locally sourced chicken breast, roasted and stuffed with lemon, capers and chillis.

‘I remember sitting having a picnic in the summer with the sun shining on my face,’ said Marcy.  ‘We’ve used many locally sourced products for our recipes and the fruit and vegetables were inspired by our grandparents who all had allotments.  We wanted to create the feeling of happiness felt during the summer.’

The event was judged by Mr G Bryant who is a former Lt Cdr at HMS Nelson. He has previously been involved in the tri-service cookery competition called Salon Culinaire.  Mr Bryant said: ‘I have been so impressed by the energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment of the girls.  I would take any of the dishes home and eat them for my supper.  The standard has been excellent.’

The girls who took part were:

Ruby Newport Spiers and Hannah Woods

Maddie Gadeke and Hannah Wilkinson

Jessica Medlow and Alice Robertson

Jessica Norris and Marcy Lea

Grace Waring and Amelia Spencer

Kendra Kittredge and Phoebe Carlile

Three winning teams will be announced later this week. Their winning menus will be submitted into the county heats of the Create & Cook Competition organised and run by Fit2Cook.
