Art and Design Technology Exhibition at Portsmouth High School

Wealth of creative talent at Portsmouth High School’s Art and Design Technology Exhibition

Senior School -

Portsmouth High School students proudly displayed their work at the annual Art and Design Technology exhibition this week.

Parents and governors joined VIP guests including the Deputy Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Ken Ellcome and Deputy Lady Mayoress, Mrs Jo Ellcome, the Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Mrs Connie Hockley and the Mayor’s Consort Councillor Geoff Hockley and the Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Mrs Lynn Hook and Consort Councillor Mark Hook.

‘The exhibition is a culmination of a great deal of hard work by the girls. This year the work is extremely varied with photography, fine art and textiles. What has impressed me is not only the skills involved but the personal ideas that range from cultural influences of architecture to very political statements about the role of women in society, said Head of Art, Mrs Amelia Brooks.

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Ken Ellcome, said ‘I’ve very much enjoyed looking at the design

technology exhibits here tonight as they all have practical applications and show a multi-skilled approach. The standard of the display is very high and the students are all very enthusiastic about their work”.

Lower Sixth student Harriet Bone had her modern portraiture work on show. She said “My work is an expression of myself and who I am, the way I relate to others and how I feel about how they relate back to me. I see it as a way of getting other people to think and question themselves. I enjoy art because it is a way of expressing ideas in ways other subjects don’t allow”.

Anne McMeehan Roberts, Chairman of Governors at Portsmouth High School added: “The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to come and talk to the artists themselves and gain a real insight into the motivation behind their work and what they are trying to achieve. There is a tremendous range of work on display here tonight which is of a very high standard”.
