Bumblebees make new friends on Vernon House Charity Day

Junior School -

There was a distinctive hue of yellow and black at the Junior School recently as pupils and staff dressed to support the Vernon house charity day for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

Visiting speakers from the Trust gave an informative talk in assembly sharing lots of new facts about bumblebees creating a new sense of appreciation for these distinctive and hardworking insects.

The girls enthusiastically supported the day with a carousel of competitions to raise money for the Trust in the hope of adopting a beehive. There were games at break time and at lunch the art room was a hive of activity as girls came to support Vernon’s fundraising activities. Guessing the number of bees in a jar, making buzzy bees, creating bee badges and learning how to draw a bee with its beautiful stripes were just a few of the events on offer. There was also a popular raffle with some lovely handcrafted bees as prizes made by Mrs Creal, Mrs Jenkins and Mrs Swain.

Vernon house captain Francesca (Year 6) said ‘Bumblebees need our help as they are becoming endangered because their habitats are disappearing. There aren’t so many wild flowers for them so it’s really important we plant bee friendly flowers in our gardens. We are raising money to help them today”.

Year 1 teacher Mrs Michou, and Year 4 teacher Mrs Newcombe, who organised the charity day said ‘Girls and staff have been so enthusiastic and supportive of our fundraising efforts today. Assembly this morning reminded everyone of the important role bumblebees play as pollinators and we can’t afford to lose them. Everyone can help by growing bee friendly flowers in their gardens to provide a haven for bees as they can no longer rely on their natural countryside habitat. Thank you to everyone who helped and donated to this very worthy cause’.
