The Junior School offers more with its rich, balanced programme of study than just the core requirements of the National Curriculum. We aim to create an environment in which all girls can enjoy learning and reach their potential. While emphasis is placed on the core subjects of English, Maths, and Science, attention is also given to sporting, creative and performance skills. Extensive opportunity is offered to the girls to become confident, independent learners and to work cooperatively with others.
Our excellent ICT facilities give the girls every opportunity to use a wide range of equipment and ensure that we can provide pupils with a vast new range of learning opportunities and experiences.
Music is taught by a specialist throughout the school and instruction is offered on an individual basis in a wide range of instruments. Girls are encouraged to perform on a variety of different occasions including assemblies, concerts and Open Day and many take part in our annual singing and 'Young Musician of the Year' competitions.
The Reception girls begin by following a programme based on the Early Learning Goals of the Foundation Stage and, when appropriate, begin work on the Key Stage One curriculum. The Key Stage One curriculum is followed through in Year 1 and Year 2.
In these early stages, a series of cross-curricular topics is designed to extend knowledge and understanding of the world. There is a strong emphasis on exploration and discovery, which encourages imaginative ideas and builds confidence.
By Year 3, girls have established very firm academic foundations, which are then developed and extended. More of the curriculum is taught as discrete subjects and there is wider use of specialist teachers. French is taught in Years 5 and 6, and younger girls can attend French Clubs held during the lunch break and after school.
PE is taught by specialist staff from Year 3. Dovercourt has its own netball courts and grass area and we are also able to take advantage of the Senior School sports hall and gym. PE activities within the curriculum include netball, gymnastics, dance, tennis, rounders, athletics and pop lacrosse. Girls in Year 4 swim weekly at HMS Temeraire, where we also hold our annual swimming gala. In the summer term, as part of their Outdoor and Adventurous Activities programme, Year 6 take part in a five-day residential trip.
