Looking for a Pre-School or Junior place for your daughter at a leading independent school for girls?
Portsmouth High School is an independent school for girls located in the heart of Southsea in Hampshire and has been successfully educating girls since 1882. The school has an outstanding reputation for academic success and is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, the leading provider of independent education for girls in the country.
Portsmouth High welcomes girls from Pre-school through to the Sixth Form and identifies strengths, guides enthusiasm and unlocks the potential of every girl.
A powerful learning environment – the focus on girls is reflected in the design of spaces, the use of digital technology, a challenging and rewarding curriculum and the way in which pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.
A safe and happy place – the school is grounded in a culture of wellbeing, trust and respect of oneself and others. Academic achievement is set within the broader development of the whole person – social, cultural, spiritual and physical as well as intellectual.
An excellent preparation for the next phase at every stage – the Pre-School and Junior School provide secure foundations for Senior School; the Senior School provides a broad and balanced education that prepares girls to specialise at A Level; the Sixth Form provides a perfect bridge to higher study and the world of work.
Academic excellence – Each year pupils celebrate impressive public examination results at both GCSE and A Level and we credit our success to diligent girls and well-qualified teachers. Furthermore the girls study highly regarded traditional courses which gives them a firm foundation for academic excellence. Girls leave us for respected university courses and go on to excel in a range of careers.

What current parents and pupils say...
A calm oasis in the city with so much to offer… The staff are so warm and friendly and have always shown a genuine interest in us as parents and our daughter which has made the transition into Pre-School very easy.
When my daughter joined in September she was really shy. Through the nurturing and patience of her teachers she has developed into a much more sociable and bubbly girl. She loves the outdoor play and forest school activities, looks forward to French and music classes and is developing her reading and writing skills with great enthusiasm.
Alex, Year 6
My time at Portsmouth High Junior School has made me more confident in myself and has pushed me to achieve more than I imagined possible. It has made me go for things that I wouldn’t have gone for and made me try new things. The school has made me realise that anything is possible if you try hard. I have made friends that will stay with me forever.
Jemima, Year 6
Dovercourt has prepared me to be more confident, say my ideas and work my hardest at every subject and not to be afraid to ask a teacher for help.
Chilli, Year 6
I feel like it has developed my personality, my social life and my way of thinking. Without the school, my aspirations would be very different to what they are now. It has made me confident and given me many opportunities to step forward to show everyone who I am.
Eleanor, Year 5
The lessons on my taster day were interesting, which made it enjoyable to learn. Having come from a school where there was no garden to play in I was excited to see such a beautiful dell and a climbing frame.
There was a big selection of food for lunch and I really liked the fact that there were hot puddings during the week and ice cream on Fridays. At the end of the day I already felt like I was part of the school and I was desperate to come back again. My Taster Day at Portsmouth High School was amazing and I’m so happy to be a PHS girl now.
