Year 2 pupils from Dovercourt visited the Cathedral Church of St Thomas of Canterbury in Old Portsmouth yesterday to discover more about what the inside of a Christian Church looks like, and one lucky pupil was able to dress up in the Bishop's clothes.

The pupils met with the Education Officer at the Cathedral who first showed the girls how the building had changed since it was first built using a colourful wooden model before they had the opportunity to look around.

The pupils marvelled at the stained glass windows and saw patterns in the glass that were so tiny they had to really concentrate. They also looked at the font and saw how a baptism would take place, they were then allowed to dip their fingers into the holy water and draw a fish on the ground. Some of the girls were then allowed to climb up to the pulpit and Beatrice Turnbull was chosen to dress up in the Bishop's clothes.

On the way back to school the girls also visited the Royal Garrison Church and found out that the first cup of tea to be drunk in Britain was drunk there, just after Charles II wedding. They all have lots of ideas for their Churches project now, and as you can see from the quotes below are still talking excitedly about their visit.

"My favourite part was when Emma lit the candle and we said a prayer" Abi P

"We liked the stained glass windows" Milly H and Abigail G

"It was great to see the organ pipes that looked like a monkey's face" Serena

"We saw the marks on the wall that the builders had made" Imogen
