Jane has worked in commercial radio for 20 years as a journalist, programme director and music presenter; she has also been gigging as a stand up comedian since October 2005. She is also an accomplished writer and has published two psychological thrillers, Grievous Angel and The Murder Ballard. Her third novel, Can’t Let Go, is due out in November 2007.
Jane’s talk covered only a tiny part of the much wider field of broadcasting. As a part-time teacher of a postgraduate radio journalism course at Highbury College Jane is also passionate about positive role models for girls and believes we need more women working in radio presentation and management.
Sarah Spender, Head of Careers at the School said; “The pupils loved Jane’s talk, it is great to have such a witty and intelligent speaker come to inspire the pupils. We try to bring as many external speakers into the school as possible to add variety to our careers programme. It is important for pupils to hear first hand from the people doing those jobs what’s involved and learn from them the best routes into following their desired career path”
The School also runs themed careers evenings ranging from medicine, business and finance, law and the media, bringing in local practioners and lecturers to enable students to gain as much knowledge and research before embarking on further study to purse their dream jobs.
During their post AS Exams Reading Week the Lower Sixth will be spending the day at the University of Portsmouth visiting the Creative Arts, Virtual Reality, Biological Sciences and Languages Departments where they will gain a further insight into courses and careers in these fields.
