However, Marc Guillemot in ‘Safran’ is likely to be awarded 3rd place over Sam, because he will have 82 hours deducted from his finish time in lieu of the hours he spent standing by the injured Yann Eliès just before Christmas. Sam was awarded 30 hours for race time lost in sailing towards the stricken sailor. There is a slight chance that Marc will not be able to finish the race as his boat lost its keel this week, previously damaged by hitting a sea mammal in December. Of the 30 competitors that started the race on 9 Nov, only 11 are still in the race.
At Portsmouth High School we are all waiting expectantly for Sam to cross the finish line. Headmistress Mrs Clough Said; “Sam’s achievements have thrilled us all and we have followed the race with great excitement. She has competed in this gruelling challenge with courage, determination and a sense of humour so typical of her. Sam has worked hard tirelessly to carve out a place for herself in the international sailing arena at the age of 34 and she is a huge inspiration to the girls at Portsmouth High School; we can’t wait to welcome her back to her old school.”
Year 8 pupil Lily Summers who was lucky enough to meet Sam and visit her boat Roxy in September said; "I think Sam is very brave to follow such daring dreams and sail over such dangersous seas. When you see the clips of her on the news its amazing to see what she is doing in such a cramped space on her boat. When I'm older I would love to do what Sam has done."
