A level Drama and Theatre Studies students from Portsmouth High School will be performing Dario Fo’s The Devil in Drag at Sweet ECA during this years Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The 10 students formed the company, Breast Assembly, specifically for The Fringe and will perform this fast-moving, hilarious comedy every day between August 3 and August 9 as part of the world’s largest arts festival.
The Fringe was established in 1947 and encourages open-access for all performers. The students will be joining approximately 18,700 other performers who between them will be putting on 31,200 performances in over 247 different venues across the city.
Rosemary Comrie; Head of Drama, said; “I’m incredibly impressed with the girls’ hard work; they have raised funds themselves in order to take their play to Edinburgh, washing cars, making cakes, running events for the purpose. They have spent their holidays rehearsing, and have produced a collaborative piece of theatre which is entirely their own, pooling their individual practical and technical skills.
“They are a stunning cast of young actors; and I’ve no doubt that they will impress the audiences in Edinburgh. They have also learnt a great deal from the experience; not many groups of 17 and 18 year olds would be so organised and arrange to take their play to Edinburgh.”
‘The Devil in Drag’ is a satirical farce by Nobel prize winner Dario Fo; set in sixteenth century Northern Italy, Pizzocca fancies Judge Tristano, but hides this even from herself, until she discovers her body has assumed new, devastatingly gorgeous proportions when she wasn’t looking.
Now not short of a boob or two, she discovers a whole new world of ecstasy, all because of a pair of misguided devils who target the wrong bottom when breaking and entering!
Amelia Reid (17), who plays the Inquisitor said; “We are all incredibly excited about performing in Edinburgh, it is going to be an amazing experience. Lots of actors start at The Fridge; Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Jude Law have all appeared on stage; so who knows, one of us might be the next big name!” |
