Victorian Week at Dovercourt PDF Print E-mail

sv200429_smallJunior School pupils have had a week of celebrations to celebrate the School's 125 Birthday. The events kicked off with a huge Birthday Party on Friday 9th February organised by the PSA.

On Monday 12th Feb the whole school dressed in Victorian Costumes and brought history to life by having a taste of a Victorian Classroom – pupils got to learn about Queen Victoria and the Empire, create miniatures and drawings and learn Victorian songs.

On Tuesday, pupils were visited by Story Teller Michael O’Leary; they also completed a picture of the school for an exhibition called “A Child’s Eye View of Dovercourt”.

Wednesday 14th was a special day in the programme of activities – as not only was it the School’s Birthday Service at the Cathedral – but Dovercourt pupils were also involved in two very special activities and were visited by two important guests.

Jean Smith and Mary Hind, former pupils who were at Portsmouth High School in the 1940’s, were special guests of honour at a tree planting and time capsule burial ceremony. The Time Capsule contained all manner of items selected by the pupils to celebrate the school's history and also to look towards the future and the next 125 years!

Afterwards, the two ladies spoke to Year 6 pupils about their experiences during World War II, as they were amongst PHS pupils who were evacuated to Adhurst St Mary, a large country house near Petersfield.

The finale to the Dovercourt Theme week will be an Old Time Music Hall style Talent Show – with all acts appropriate to the era!
