Opportunities in individual sports
Girls in Years 7 to 10 play in the Independent Schools’ Netball League for the southern area and regularly finish in the top three. Under 15s and under 19s play in competitions against other GDST schools across the country where the standard of play is very high. There is also an annual GDST residential weekend at Condover Hall where U13 girls train and compete.
There is coaching for all age groups during the week and by invitation on Saturday mornings. An external coach supports county academy training through the ‘Pathways’ club structure.
Years 7 to 13 play in a programme of friendly fixtures with local schools and U15 and U19 teams play in GDST level tournaments. U14 players enjoy a weekend event at The Royal High School, Bath playing against other GDST schools.
Weekly coaching sessions take place after school to improve individual skills and team tactics for competitive players.
Trampolining is very popular and there is a clear programme of progression from novice to advanced.
Girls can enter competitions at the appropriate level ranging from, for example, the Portsmouth Schools’ competition to the national schools progressional rounds. PHS girls reached the national semi-finals in 2015.
Portsmouth High School sends teams and individuals to compete in the Hampshire Schools’ Cross Country Championships and recently one of our girls progressed to the Southern Schools Inter County Championships. Girls also compete in the Girls’ School Association and GDST rallies. There are breakfast and lunchtime running clubs.
There are lunchtime training sessions and a programme of friendly matches. Girls enter the Portsmouth Schools’ Sport Partnership tournaments.
Girls compete in GDST competitions where they prepare both floor and vault performances. Last year our Year 8 girls won both events competing in the Year 9 age group (U14).
Cheerleading is incredibly popular and girls have the opportunity to take part in an 8 week coaching programme led by the University of Portsmouth. This culminates in a ‘Cheer Festival’ where our girls are often highly placed.
Swimming lessons prepare girls for squad participation which competes at GDST level. There are also friendly meets with local schools which meet at the Mountbatten Centre.
There is rounders training at lunchtimes for all ages and Portsmouth High School organises Portsmouth Schools’ partnership tournaments for local schools. The school plays in friendly matches as well as GDST rounders matches at senior level.
There are lunchtime, after school and Saturday training sessions in partnership with Southsea Tennis Club. Girls play in both friendlies and Hampshire Tennis Leagues. In 2016 PHS girls won the Year 10 Division 2 County round and were finalists in the regional competition.
Girls can also compete in the Senior Trust Tennis Rally and it is an honour to play in the annual GDST Brighton and Hove tennis match which has been running since 1901. For the last 5 years Portsmouth has held the senior trophy.
Girls compete against local schools in the Portsmouth League Championships.
There are also GDST Athletics Championships and last year PHS came sixth overall out of all the GDST schools across the age range and second for the Year 9 age group.
There is an annual GDST golf competition which attracts the best golfers from across the GDST with some girls playing at national level.
In 2016 a Year 11 Portsmouth High School pupil came an impressive third at the challenging Swinley Forest Golf Club.
There is an after-school sailing club and this summer girls competed in the Itchenor Schools’ Sailing Regatta.
External coaches provide tuition in dance and there is a dance competition girls can aspire to at GDST level.
