The sport curriculum across the school is broad and balanced encouraging participation at all levels of expertise. There is also a wide choice of co-curricular sports offering girls the opportunity to try something new and discover new interests and talents.
There is a fully equipped sport England standard sports hall and outdoor sports area at the Senior School and netball/tennis courts at the Junior School.
The school also has use of some of the best sports facilities in the local area including co-ownership, with the University of Portsmouth, of a multi-use games area of four floodlit courts and access to a synthetic turf pitch for hockey and football as well as a grass athletics track. The school also uses university sports halls and fitness suites. A swimming pool, synthetic turf pitch and athletics track are also hired from HMS Temeraire.
A competitive spirit…
As part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, Portsmouth High School has unique opportunities to take part in many GDST
tournaments competing across 26 schools all over the country. Competitions are held in gymnastics, cross country, netball, hockey, tennis, rounders, athletics, golf and swimming and the standard is consistently high. The school also regularly competes in national schools’ competitions and in many local leagues as well as against other schools in the local area.
Sports tours are a regular highlight of the sport calendar. The last hockey and netball tour to Barbados saw a squad of 32 girls set off on an 8,000 mile round trip to experience the challenges of strong opposition—and blazing temperatures. Sports tours offer the challenge of play in a different culture and climate against a variety of talent and players always come home enlivened and passionate about their sport.
Sports Scholarships are awarded to girls going into the Sixth Form at Portsmouth High School. Case studies on current sports scholars can be found here.
