Entrance procedures

Entrance procedures to join Portsmouth High School depend on your daughter’s age.

The main entry points in the school are 3+, 4+, 7+, 11+, 13+ and into the Sixth Form. However, we are happy to discuss entry at other points with prospective parents, should places be available.

We are looking for academic potential and we want to know that any girl offered a place will be happy with us.

All girls from Year 1 to Year 6 are assessed prior to entry. This is achieved with a light touch approach during a Taster Day.

Our youngest pupils in the Pre-School and Reception Class come in for informal taster sessions on a one-to-one basis and we work closely with parents to facilitate this.

All these assessments are conducted with every effort to put the girls at their ease so that they can relax and have an enjoyable experience.

If you would like your daughter to come for a taster session, please contact Admissions Registrar Mrs Fergie Cox on 023 9282 4916 or via admissions@por.gdst.net

Girls looking to join us in Year 7 are asked to sit an English examination paper of one hour.

There is also a mathematical paper testing numerical skills and an ability to apply mathematical knowledge which will last for one hour. These papers are based on the National Curriculum and no special coaching is needed.

A reference will be requested from the current school. This reference is part of our entrance procedure. Sample papers for 11+ are available once your daughter is registered to sit the entrance examinations.

Assessment for entry is normally held in January of the year of entry. However, arrangements can be made on a bespoke basis for girls to sit the entrance examination at other times if places are available. Please contact our Admissions Registrar Mrs Charlotte Thomson for further information on 023 9282 6714 or via admissions@por.gdst.net

Girls will be asked to sit papers in English and mathematics and a reference will be requested from the current school.

Sample papers for 12+, 13+ and 14+ are available once your daughter is registered for an entrance examination.

We ask all candidates to visit us on a Taster Day and follow a timetable of lessons with their peers, which we arrange on an individual basis. The day is scheduled prior to the entrance examinations and allows pupils to experience a normal working day in school and familiarise themselves with the surroundings ahead of the entrance examinations. We also invite candidates and their parents to a meeting with the Headmistress, to be arranged for a mutually convenient date.

Entrance examinations are normally held in January of the year of entry but can be arranged on a bespoke basis at other times during the year if places are available. Enquiries for entry into our highly successful Sixth Form are welcome.

We expect Sixth Form students to have obtained at least seven GCSE qualifications at grade B or above. Most subjects will require at least grade A as a prerequisite for A Level study.

Applicants are invited for interview, usually in the spring term, and an offer of a place is conditional on GCSE examination results. Interviews can be held at other times if necessary.
