Preparing children for a world beyond the classroom

This week, our Year 5 girls have been enthusiastically taking part in Bikeability, the national cycling proficiency programme designed to equip children with the skills and confidence to ride safely and responsibly. From mastering control on two wheels to learning how to navigate junctions and understand road signals, the girls have embraced every challenge with determination and joy.

At Portsmouth High Prep School, we place great value on learning that extends beyond the academic curriculum. While English, mathematics, humanities and science form the foundation of our educational journey, it is the broader skills – resilience, independence, teamwork and practical life skills – that truly prepare our pupils for the world beyond the classroom.

Bikeability is a perfect example of this. It teaches not only road safety and physical coordination, but also encourages self-reliance, decision-making and a sense of personal responsibility. Watching our Year 5 girls support one another, celebrate each other’s progress, and grow in confidence has been a wonderful reminder of the importance of holistic education.

Well done, Year 5, you’ve truly earned your wheels.
