As I sit down to write my final newsletter article as Head of Portsmouth High Prep School, I find myself reflecting not on buildings, results, inspections or initiatives, but on people. Schools are, and always should be, about people. It is the children, families and colleagues who give them life, purpose and heart.
Over the years, I have been privileged to know and work with hundreds of remarkable children. Each one has brought something unique to our school community: curiosity, kindness, humour, determination, creativity and joy. Some arrived bursting with confidence, while others needed time, encouragement and reassurance to discover just how capable they truly were. Watching children grow, develop and flourish has been the greatest privilege of my career. There is nothing quite like seeing a child achieve something they once thought impossible, whether that is mastering a difficult concept, performing on stage, scoring a first goal, making a new friend or simply finding the confidence to be themselves.
One of the great joys of working in a prep school is that no two days are ever the same. The memories come flooding back: school productions and sports days, residential trips and assemblies, muddy adventures and magical moments of discovery. Yet what I will remember most are the smiles, the laughter in the corridors, the thoughtful conversations and the countless small acts of kindness that so often go unnoticed, but which tell us everything about the character of our children.
I am equally grateful to the families who have entrusted us with their children. Schools and parents are at their best when they work together, and I have been fortunate to be part of partnerships built on trust, mutual respect and a shared commitment to helping children thrive. I have enjoyed getting to know not only parents but grandparents, siblings and extended family members who have become such an important part of the wider school community. The support, encouragement and friendship shown to me over the years have meant more than I can put into words.
As I reflect on my career as a whole, I am reminded of the extraordinary colleagues with whom I have had the privilege to work. Teaching is often described as a vocation, and I have been fortunate to spend my professional life alongside talented, dedicated and deeply caring people who consistently put children first. They have inspired me, challenged me, supported me and, on many occasions, made me laugh when laughter was most needed. Whatever successes I may have enjoyed have always been the result of teamwork, and I thank every colleague, past and present, for the contribution they have made to my journey.
Portsmouth High Prep School is a special place. It is a school built not simply on academic excellence, but on relationships, values and a genuine belief in the potential of every child. It has been an honour to serve this community and to play a small part in the stories of so many young people and their families.
As I move on to the next chapter, I do so with a heart full of gratitude. Thank you for your trust, your support, your friendship and your belief in the work that we do. Most of all, thank you to the children. You have taught me as much as I could ever have hoped to teach you. Your energy, optimism and endless capacity to surprise have enriched my life beyond measure.
While I may be saying goodbye to my role, the memories will remain with me forever. I leave feeling enormously proud of all that we have achieved together and excited for all that lies ahead for this wonderful school.
