There were celebrations this morning as girls at Portsmouth High School excitedly opened envelopes containing their GCSE results.
It was another year of excellent results as 65% of all grades were A*/A, more than five times the national average. The pass rate was 100% with 96% of all grades A*-C. There was a particularly strong performance in STEM subjects with 97% of all grades being A*/A in biology, 89% A*/A in physics and 79% A*/A in chemistry.
Charlie Smith achieved 12A*s and commented she was feeling nervous and overwhelmed ‘I put lots of effort in but wasn’t expecting to do this well! My family has been so supportive with my revision and the teachers here know individual pupils well and how to assist them best. I am going in to the Sixth Form at Portsmouth High and plan to study physics, mathematics, history and French’.
Alice Sumner from Southsea achieved ten A*s and one A and was amazed by her results. She said ‘I just wasn’t expecting to do this well but I’m so happy today! Teachers here have been very supportive and prepared us so well. I want to do Chemistry, Biology, English and French in the Sixth Form here and am hoping to become a medic’.
There was double success for two sets of twins at the school. Megan and Emma Richards and Charlotte and Emily Smalley were totally shocked but delightfully happy with a magnificent set of results between them. Megan Richards said ‘I expected to do well in some subjects but not in others but all my results are fantastic. I can’t believe it!’.
Many of the girls are staying on to take A Levels in the Sixth Form at Portsmouth High. This year was an excellent year for A Levels as girls achieved over 13% of A* grades almost doubling the national average of 7%.
Headmistress, Mrs Jane Prescott, commented: ‘We are very proud of the girls who have achieved these wonderful results. They have worked hard under the guidance of our specialist teachers and many have exceeded their own expectations. Here at Portsmouth High we are always delighted with excellent examination results but we recognise there is so much more to a first-class education. Here girls achieve across the school in all areas including sport, drama and music and we celebrate all those individual successes too’.
