Portsmouth High School hosted a Sports Awards Evening last night to celebrate the sporting achievements of girls from across the Senior School.
Awards were presented by guest speaker Madeleine Campbell, a former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympics, European and World Championships, and competed for England in the Commonwealth Games. Madeleine now coaches and creates a wide range of opportunities to inspire young people to be involved in sport.
Year 8 pupil Ruby Dale received several sports awards and was particularly pleased to be awarded the Year 8 Victrix (for the most individual points on sports day) and Holly Fudge Sprint Cup (fastest person on the track on sports day). Ruby, who is the current Girls’ Day School Trust 100m champion across 26 schools said “It is great to have been awarded the Victrix and Sprint Cup as there are lots of good athletes in my year as well. I joined an athletics club last year and have been training hard a couple of days a week. I enjoyed being part of Sports Awards Evening because it showcases the talent in our school across a variety of sports”.
Rachel Kellagher and Frances Colley from Year 10 shared the Junior Physical Education Cup for representing the school at a high level over a range of sports. Rachel said “I was pleased to receive the cup because I really enjoy PE here and have had opportunities in lots of different sports”.
Portsmouth High School offers Sports Scholarships and Christine Addae-Kyereme (Year 12), who received a range of Awards last night said “What I have most enjoyed about being a Sports Scholar is being able to coach younger pupils and watch them develop in confidence and skill. Their passion and excitement inspires me and reminds me why I love sports so much”.
Director of Sport, Mrs Lorraine Divilly, said “I would like to thank our Sports Scholars and Ambassadors who have worked hard to promote sport across the school through inspiring, coaching and being incredible role models for younger pupils. I hope everyone has enjoyed all the opportunities the sports department has on offer and will continue to lead healthy and active lifestyles in the future”.
