After a few strange years from Covid, sisters Hazel and Ella have finally been able to compete back on the water at as many competitions as they can get to. Here is a round up of what they have been doing since summer 2021.
Chichester Harbour Feva racing – this event was put on to replace the National Schools Sailing competition that was sadly cancelled due to Covid. Boats from all over the harbour entered and raced in the first week of the summer holidays over two days. Ella sailing, with her helm Holly, came first closely followed by Hazel and her crew Edith in second.
Optimist National Championships – Weymouth
After a week sailing in varied conditions that tested every sailor Ella came 41st out of 82 Boats in the Senior fleet at the Nationals in Weymouth. Ella was the 9th girl (7th UK girl); an amazing achievement and her hard work and dedication to sailing the Optimists since she first stepped into one age 6 was really deserved. There were over 200 boats in total racing across several fleets.
Hazel, having outgrown the boat, was chosen to coach the youngsters starting out racing Optimists.
RYA Youth Nationals – Plymouth
Hazel and her crew Holly entered the RYA Youth Nationals in Plymouth which was the first event in the 420 class together having only sailed a few times before training locally and came second under 17th girls team in the UK.
Chichester Federation week
Ella helmed the RS Feva with her crew Florence and came 4th out of a strong fleet of in very windy conditions despite being one of the lightest teams.
Youth race week at Hayling Island Sailing club
Ella and her helm Holly dominated the 40 strong fleet of RS Fevas winning the event that took place over 5 days. Hazel and her crew Edith came 6th. Both girls sailed brilliantly all week.
Optimist Late summer championships – Poole
Ella repeated her strong performance at the Nationals coming 9th girl and placed 36th out of 102 boats. This led to her being selected to be part of the UK Optimist Team Racing group (top 8 girls and boys) who trained at Weymouth before sending the top 4 off to events in Europe.
RYA Eric Twiname Team Racing Championships – Oxford
Hazel and Ella were selected to attend this event and sailed together in the RS Feva as part of the Hayling Island Sailing Club Team of two boats. Sadly a lack of wind meant limited sailing and the team didn’t make it through to the final rounds but they put in some very notable performances winning against several teams that made it through to the last rounds.
420 Grand Prix – Itchenor
In a very windy three day event Hazel placed 11th out of 28 boats.
RS Feva Winter Championships – Weymouth
Holly and Ella won the event despite the freezing weather and really heavy winds on the Sunday they sailed consistently throughout the event to end up winning by 1 point. A fantastic achievement.
Both sisters are now continuing to train and compete throughout the winter Ella sailing the Optimist and Feva (as part of the RYA regional training squad) and Hazel in the 420 and 29er.
