‘Are we nearly there yet?’ Year 3’s unforgettable adventure in the New Forest!

Last Thursday, Year 3 pupils embarked on their very first school residential trip to Avon Tyrrell in the heart of the New Forest. Excitement was high from the moment they left the school grounds, with eager voices calling out, ‘Are we nearly there?’ as the journey began.

After around an hour on the coach, signs for Avon Tyrrell appeared and the children delighted in spotting New Forest ponies along the way. Upon arrival, the group quickly settled into their lodges before heading out to explore the beautiful surroundings. A delicious curry lunch provided the perfect start to what would be a busy and enjoyable stay.

The afternoon activities saw the class split into two groups to take part in archery and den building. Both sessions encouraged teamwork and resilience, with pupils enthusiastically embracing new challenges. The dens constructed were particularly impressive, with many successfully keeping their builders dry during a playful test with water from the instructors.

Later, the group returned to their lodges to unpack, make their beds and change into warmer clothes for the evening ahead. After a hearty supper of sausages and mash, the children gathered for a much-anticipated campfire. The pleasant weather allowed plenty of time for outdoor play, with pupils enjoying the open grassy spaces with their friends.

The campfire itself was a highlight of the trip. Led by experienced instructors, the evening included marshmallow toasting, songs, riddles and games. Every pupil joined in, and it was a joy to see so much laughter and camaraderie. After a full day of activities, the children settled down for a restful night’s sleep.

The following morning began with packing up and a substantial cooked breakfast to refuel for the final activity: low ropes. This team-building course challenged the pupils to work together as they navigated obstacles, balanced on equipment and supported one another along the course. It was a fantastic opportunity to see different strengths shine, with everyone contributing to the group’s success.

‘I loved spending time away with my friends,’ said one excited pupil.

The residential concluded with a picnic lunch before the journey back to school. Year 3 returned with wonderful memories of their first residential experience and would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Avon Tyrrell for making their stay so enjoyable and memorable.
