Awards Evening for Years 7, 8 and 9; ‘an evening of celebration – not of perfection, but of progress. Not of comparison, but of community.’

Portsmouth High School students were the proud recipients of achievement awards, certificates and cups this week as friends, family, pupils and staff from the school gathered for an evening of celebration.

Achievements were celebrated across Years 7, 8 and 9 and pupils received awards from sports and drama, music, social responsibility and  Duke of Edinburgh as well as academic year prizes.

Head, Mrs Sarah Parker, introduced the evening:

‘Let’s begin this evening of celebration—not of perfection, but of progress. Not of comparison, but of community.’

Head Girl, Emma, introduced the Chair of Governors, Commodore Chris Palmer:

‘Commodore Palmer served in the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm from 1976 to 2009, holding command appointments both at sea and ashore. Throughout his naval career, he was known for his commitment to excellence and his ability to lead in complex and demanding environments. Following his retirement from active service, Commodore Palmer continued to contribute to public life, taking on roles such as CEO of The Corporation of the Church House and The Church House Conference Centre in Westminster, as well as working as a consultant in defence, aviation, and change management. Until recently, Commodore Palmer served as a Gentleman Usher to the late Queen and his Majesty the King, reflecting his ongoing commitment to service at the highest levels. His achievements have been recognised with numerous honours, including being appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2009. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, a Liveryman of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots, and a Freeman of the City of London.

‘We are privileged to welcome Commodore Palmer this evening as he presents the awards and joins us in celebrating the achievements of our students.’

The evening also heard music including Nocturne by Chopin performed by Saffy, Year 8, on the piano and Die with a Smile by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars sung by Francine, Year 7.

Mrs Parker concluded:

‘Tonight isn’t just about trophies and certificates… it’s about taking a moment to recognise the journey each of our students has taken this year: the effort made, and the growth achieved.’

And addressing the girls directly she said:

‘Every single one of you has achieved something worth celebrating. Some of you have reached incredible academic goals, others have shown outstanding kindness, creativity, or perseverance. Many of you have stepped outside your comfort zones, tried something new, or lifted up a friend when they needed it most.’
