Budding Musical Talent Shines at Portsmouth High Prep School’s Teatime Concert

Portsmouth High Prep School was alive with music and excitement on Tuesday as we celebrated the wonderful emerging talent of our young performers at the spring term Teatime Concert. The event offered a delightful showcase of skill, confidence, and creativity, with nineteen pupils taking to the stage.

Girls from Year 3 to Year 6 wowed an enthusiastic audience of more than forty parents, teachers, and friends. Performances ranged from charming beginner pieces to impressively polished works, including Windscreen Wipers (Rose – violin), Can You Feel The Love Tonight (Beatrice – voice), Supermarket Trot (Zoe – flute), Valse Russe (Vanessa – clarinet), and Gavotte (Adelaide – violin). Florence, Felicia, Cordelia, Margot, Yananiso, Molly and Annabel also played with poise and beauty, each bringing their own artistry to the stage.

The musical variety continued with captivating vocal and instrumental performances: Ayla sang The Fate of Ophelia, Rosa performed a spirited rendition of Naughty, Emily offered a lyrical Prelude, Jessica delivered a confident Fearless, Beatrix energised the room with In The Groove, Payton enchanted listeners with Carousel, and Aiyanna brought calmness to the afternoon with her piano version of All Of Me.

The concert was led with warmth and professionalism by our dedicated music prefects Beatrice, Jessica, and Cordelia, whose leadership ensured the event ran smoothly from start to finish.

Headmaster Mr Marshallsay summed up the spirit of the evening perfectly:

‘This is where it all starts. Opportunities such as these give girls a safe space to perform and build their confidence. It is thanks to our enthusiastic Director of Music, Mrs Hill, that over 90% of the children in school play a musical instrument — a tremendous achievement. Thank you to all our performers, our Year 6 hosts, and the families and staff who came to support the girls this evening.’

The Teatime Concert was not just a celebration of music, but a wonderful reminder of the courage, dedication, and joy our pupils bring to their learning — and a glimpse of the exciting musical journeys still ahead.
