Flying Club Students Reach New Heights on Their Maiden Flights

This week marked an exciting milestone for fourteen members of the Flying Club from Portsmouth High School GDST, who each completed their very first flight from Popham Airfield. For many, it was not only their first time in a light aircraft, but also their first opportunity to take control of the plane themselves.

Students flew in the Ikarus C42, is perfect for beginners experiencing the thrill of flight. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, each young pilot had the chance to handle the controls and gain a real sense of what it’s like to fly.

While waiting for their turn in the cockpit, the group kept just as busy on the ground. They developed their technical understanding and hand eye coordination using a flight simulator and even took part in a hands‑on engine activity, giving them the chance to see how an aircraft engine works up close.

The day was made even more special by beautiful weather, providing clear views and ideal flying conditions throughout. It was an inspiring day for everyone involved, and a fantastic opportunity for our budding aviators.

The Flying Club is already looking forward to its next adventure!
