This week, our Prep School was buzzing with excitement as pupils enjoyed a special Geography Day themed around ‘Coasts and the Sea’.
We were thrilled to welcome experts from the Southsea Coastal Scheme, who wowed everyone with their incredible wave machine. This hands-on demonstration showed how different sea defences protect our coastline, giving pupils a real-world insight into coastal management.
The day was packed with creative and interactive activities led by our staff including crafting puffins, designing fish adapted to unique habitats, creating comic strips about shipwrecks, exploring RNLI safety and exploring map making techniques. Pre-School joined in with the fun too and created their own undersea collage and enjoyed a languages lesson with a focus on songs around things to take to the beach.
Year 6 pupil Olivia said: ‘The wave machine session was great. I now understand the changes being made to Southsea seafront to protect us from flooding, and how each sea defence does a different job.’
Indi in Year 4 added, ‘I learnt about the different flags you see on the beach. If there’s a red and yellow flag, I know there’s a lifeguard there, which makes me feel much safer.’
Clara in Year 6 loved the LEGO map-making session: ‘We had to think carefully about coastline features like bays and cliffs. It was such a creative way to remember the vocabulary.’
The day also included Year 12 A Level Geography students and senior school staff, who visited and joined in enthusiastically helping Year 2 pupils make puffins and creating soundscapes with Year 1 as well as joining in with the wave machine lessons. These joint sessions were a brilliant way for sixth formers to consolidate their learning while inspiring younger pupils.
Geography Day was a perfect mix of fun and learning—sparking curiosity, building confidence, and deepening understanding of the world around us.
