Portsmouth High Prep and Pre-School’s spacious grounds in the city enable the children to explore and learn about the natural world first-hand.
Each week during the summer term, Pre-School have enjoyed a gardening lesson with teacher, Mrs Cane, and have grown potatoes, green beans, sweetcorn, tomatoes and marigolds. In the last week of term the class dug up their potato crop and were amazed at how many potatoes they were able to harvest.
Mrs Cane said ‘We have had mixed success with our gardening. Everything has been done naturally without any artificial fertilizers or pesticides so we have lost some of our crops to hungry slugs and snails! The children have enjoyed their lessons outside and made those all-important connections with the natural world in their learning.’
