Portsmouth High School, part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), has received high praise in a recent independent review highlighting its exceptional academic standards, outstanding pastoral care, and nurturing all-girls environment.
Located in the heart of Southsea, just minutes from the seafront, the school has quietly delivered a first-class education since 1882. With around 500 pupils aged 3 to 18, the school spans a 20-acre site across its Prep and Senior schools, offering a unique blend of heritage architecture and modern facilities.
The review commends the Prep School’s striking Grade II-listed Dovercourt building and expansive outdoor learning spaces, including a woodland area, outdoor classroom, and access to the local beach. The Senior School is equally impressive, featuring a dedicated science block with seven laboratories, a cookery school, and a light-filled art atrium.
Sport is a key focus, with facilities including a Sport England-standard sports hall and access to university and naval grounds. The school’s netball team recently earned national recognition, and pupils regularly compete in international events across a range of disciplines.
Music and the arts flourish at Portsmouth High, with high participation in instrumental learning and opportunities for international tours and theatrical productions. Sixth Form students benefit from tailored teaching, leadership opportunities, and strong support for university applications.
Pastoral care is described as ‘outstanding,’ with dedicated wellbeing spaces, trained staff, and a ‘big sister’ mentoring system. The school’s Daffodil House, opened in 2022, serves as a hub for mental health and wellbeing support.
Head Sarah Parker, appointed in 2024, is praised for her calm leadership and commitment to girls-only education. ‘Every girl is known here,’ she says. ‘Even the quietest voices are heard.’
The school will host its next Open Morning on Saturday 27 September 2025, from 10am to 12 noon, offering prospective families the chance to explore its facilities and meet staff and pupils.
