Pre-School enjoy learning outdoors

An outdoor learning lesson for Pre-School took place this week in glorious spring sunshine in the woodland ‘Dell’, a much-loved space in the school’s extensive grounds.

Pre-School’s resident bear, Buttercup, was delighted to join teacher and Assistant Head, Mrs Irvine-Capel’s lesson, and she helped demonstrate to the children all about staying safe in the sun by wearing her protective hat, sunglasses, applying sun cream and drinking lots of water to stay hydrated.

Buttercup’s demonstration was followed by an exploration session in the grounds looking for bugs and early spring flowers. The lesson finished with games using a brightly coloured parachute to launch a balloon which was so much fun.

Mrs Irvine-Capel, said ‘Our Explorer approach starts with our youngest pupils, and taking learning outside in the school’s spacious grounds gives us the perfect forum to nurture the key attributes on our Learning Wheel. In outdoor sessions, Pre-School children are able to make links and apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios, show curiosity in the wonders of the natural world and engage their imaginations in a variety of ways, whilst also having lots of fun!’

‘Research shows us the clear benefits that spending time in nature can have on children’s emotional wellbeing, focus and excitement for learning and our spiral curriculum ensures that our outdoor learning provides fresh stimulation and challenge at all ages throughout the Prep School.’
