This week, over 150 senior school pupils performed an excitingly eclectic mix of music in the annual Gala Concert held at Portsmouth Cathedral.
The Year 11 Rock Group opened the concert with a slick medley of songs from The Killers and Kings of Leon. The rest of the programme was remarkably varied, ranging from musical theatre songs performed by Harmony, Musical Theatre Club, and sixth form soloists Jasmine and Lucy, to art music performed by Cantabile and pianist Kate. The popular Ukuladies delighted with their arrangement of Tijuana Taxi. Student composers Aoki and Lauren, inspired all with the world premieres of their evocative compositions, performed by the choir and orchestra, respectively.
‘Conducting my piece in the Gala Concert was a brilliant experience,’ said Lauren. ‘It was amazing to hear the piece come to life, especially in the acoustics of the cathedral. I’m so grateful to the musicians in the orchestra and Mr Tinsley for making this possible.’
The concert was brought to a rousing end with the full group performing the Golden Globe-winning song, Golden, from KPop Demon Hunters, arranged and led by Mrs Morris. Year 7 pupils commented the following day, ‘It was amazing that some of the girls composed the music that we performed’. ‘It was really enjoyable and fun to do after school’.
‘This surpassed all expectations,’ said the Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Clubley.
