Student’s Powerful Song on Conflict Wins International Prize

A Year 11 student has earned international recognition after winning a top prize in a global competition run by Never Such Innocence, a charity dedicated to amplifying the voices of young people and children affected by war and conflict.

The organisation works worldwide to ensure that the perspectives of younger generations are heard by decision-makers, using creative competitions in art, poetry, speech and song to highlight the realities of conflict. Each year, thousands of entries are submitted from across the globe, reflecting the thoughts and experiences of young people living with, or reflecting on, war.

This year, Lauren achieved outstanding success, winning the overall first prize in her age category for her original song, ‘Lines.’ Her work stood out among more than 3,500 entries from over 90 countries, marking a significant achievement on the international stage.

Lauren drew inspiration from a history lesson exploring the impact of the Berlin Wall. Reflecting on the division of families, friends and an entire city, she questioned how such separation could affect so many lives. These ideas formed the emotional core of her song, which examines the human cost of conflict and division.

Described as mature and deeply thought-provoking, Lauren’s piece was influenced by iconic protest songwriting, including the work of Bob Dylan. Her ability to channel complex historical themes into a contemporary musical response impressed judges and audiences alike.

Mr Tinsley, Director of Music, has been pivotal in Lauren’s progression at PHS. He says, ‘Lauren has been an enthusiastic music scholar ever since she joined us in Year 9.  She has set up her own songwriting club for younger pupils at school and her GCSE coursework composition, San Maggiore at Dusk for choir and orchestra was one of the highlights in our Gala Concert in February.  Her musicianship is evolving quickly, and she will be studying A-level music starting next year.’

Lauren is actively involved in the school’s rock band, orchestra, and Cantabile choir, further demonstrating her commitment and talent in performance and composition. Her winning song has been published online, and she has been awarded the Never Such Innocence prize for her submission.

The competition was introduced to students by Dr Stockton-Chalk, the school’s Gifted, Able and Talented (GATE) enrichment coordinator, as part of a wider programme offering opportunities for students to engage with global issues through creative expression.

Staff and students alike have expressed immense pride in Lauren’s accomplishment. Her success not only highlights her individual talent but also contributes to raising awareness of conflict worldwide – fulfilling the charity’s mission to bring young people’s voices to those in positions of power.

Congratulations to Lauren on this prestigious achievement and for using her creativity to make a meaningful impact on a global issue.
