Thank You for the Music: Scholars and Leavers Shine at the Square Tower

The most refined senior school concert of the year unfolded in spectacular style at last week’s Scholars and Leavers Concert, held in the atmospheric setting of the Square Tower on Southsea’s seafront. Against this historic backdrop, music scholars and leavers delivered an evening of remarkable artistry, confidence and musical maturity.

Instrumental performances set an impressive standard from the outset. String players Grace and Xanthe captivated the audience with their fiery solo performances, while Year 10 flautist Hayun brought exceptional poise and musicianship to Eldin Burton’s Sonatina for Flute, performing with a level of assurance and sensitivity far beyond her years. Pianists featured prominently throughout the programme, ranging from the assured playing of Isis in Year 7 to sophisticated performances by sixth formers Kiki and Kate. Particularly memorable were Saffy, Year 9, whose brooding Brahms rhapsody showed depth and character, and Emma in Year 10, whose Bach Sinfonia was delivered with astonishing maturity and clarity.

Vocal performances were equally outstanding. Cecily cast a spell with Breathe from In the Heights, while Chloé brought humour and flair to Right Hand Man. Evelyn’s soaring interpretation of Hubert Parry’s From a City Window was a highlight of the evening. Year 11 composer Lauren, following her recent Gala Concert debut, performed her prizewinning original song reflecting on the effects of war, accompanying herself on guitar with conviction and emotional depth. Ensemble singing also shone, with Cantabile’s rendition of Bob Chilcott’s Like a Singing Bird described simply as ‘perfection’.

The evening concluded on a deeply fitting note with Jasmine, a departing sixth former who has been part of the school community since she was three years old, delivering a heartfelt and expressive performance of ABBA’s Thank You for the Music — a touching tribute to both her musical journey and an unforgettable celebration of talent.

‘My final Scholars and Leavers’ Concert at The Square Tower was a deeply emotional and memorable farewell,’ she said. ‘Having been at Portsmouth High School since before I was three years old, standing there for the last time surrounded by friends, family and teachers who have shared this journey was both joyful and bittersweet. It was a moment to reflect on years of music, growth, and friendship, and to feel truly grateful for everything the school has given me. A perfect, heartfelt ending to a very special chapter in my life.’
