West End actor inspires Les Misérables cast in unforgettable workshop

The cast and directors of the school’s upcoming musical, Les Misérables, were thrilled this week when James Hume, a renowned West End actor, visited the school to workshop some scenes from the show.

James watched the cast perform extracts and suggested some fresh ideas to energise the fabulous performance even more.

The actor shared his passion for the show saying ‘Les Misérables is the most successful musical of all time and that’s soley down to the people. Both cast and audiences alike are the passionate driving force of this musical phenomenon. The show relies on spirit, drive and a strong sense of community, both on and off stage, from all departments.’

‘To get to work with the cast at Portsmouth High School has been wonderful. To revisit the material from a show that has a special place in my heart, and seeing the students’ commitment and enthusiasm to the storytelling and their professionalism in rehearsal is a real credit to the school.’

‘I really enjoyed the workshop,’ said Frankie in Year 7, who plays the part of Young Cosette.  ‘James made the songs better and helped with characterisation.’

‘It was an eye-opener,’ said Holly, Year 11, who plays the part of Cosette. ‘His advice meant so much to us because it came directly from a professional within the industry.’

‘James helped us put more energy into each part,’ said Orla, Year 7, who plays the part of Gavroche. ‘Even if you weren’t centre stage he encouraged us to put liveliness into our parts.’

James, a former student of Musical Director Mrs Morris, was delighted to catch up with his former teacher and see the dedication of the cast performing on stage.

The show’s directors said ‘Today has been an amazing experience for us all. James’ passion for Les Misérables shone through, and his tips have added even more energy into the show.’

The school’s performance of Les Misérables takes place on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 April at 7.00pm in the school hall. Get your tickets NOW for what promises to be a fabulous performance. Tickets can be purchased online here.
