Our Year 6 pupils delighted their audience with a vibrant musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, performed in the Senior School Hall.
The production told the story of Prospero, a powerful magician, and the rightful Duke of Milan, who lived on a mysterious island with his daughter Miranda. With the help of the airy spirit Ariel, Prospero conjured up a storm to shipwreck his enemies on the island. As princes and nobles wandered the strange place, monsters and clowns plotted silly schemes, a prince and a young woman fell in love, and magic led not to revenge, but to forgiveness.
Sophia In Year 6 said ‘I was so excited for my role in the play because I love drama. I played Petal, a storytelling sprite, and I so enjoyed all the singing.’
Annabel reflected ‘I have always loved acting because it brings out a different side of me. Acting is fun at times and sad at others. In the play I was King Alonso who was a quiet but feared character who loved his son dearly. In school I am a Drama Prefect which I am so happy to be.’
The girls displayed an impressive range of talents through confident acting, lively singing, and energetic dance routines. The play was a mix of modern English with some of the famous lines from the real play mixed in, combining dramatic moments with humour and music.
‘After joining PHS in Year 3, I developed a real passion for drama’, said Hetty. ‘After becoming a Drama prefect at the beginning of Year 6, I was extremely happy to be cast as Prospero for this play.’
The audience was thoroughly entertained, and it was a wonderful opportunity to see Year 6 bring Shakespeare to life in such a creative and memorable way.
