OUTDOOR LEARNING
We know that environmental issues play a vital role in successful learning, and at Portsmouth High School, we take this seriously.
Uniquely placed and so close to the sea...
We are also, happily, uniquely placed to offer spectacular outdoor learning experiences – with large gardens and an outdoor classroom on-site, and the beach just a 10 minute walk from the school.
Learning outdoors...
Learning outdoors starts in the Pre-School and goes through to Year 6 and pupils develop a love of the great outdoors in all weathers. There are weekly lessons to develop confidence, self-esteem and knowledge of the natural world. Pupils plant vegetables and flowers and expand their knowledge finding out about trees, insects, birds and wildlife. They learn to make shelters, light fires and use tools, as well as look at the seasons and life cycles. Outdoor lessons support the curriculum and girls can have fun getting their hands dirty with real-life science and nature activities.
Down to the beach...
Running alongside outdoor learning children will also visit the beach, just 10 minutes away from the school gates, to learn about tides and the moon, and more fascinating facts about our blue planet.
