Sport in the curriculum

Langstone Sports Ground at Portsmouth High School
“The sport curriculum across the school is broad and balanced encouraging participation at all levels of expertise...”

Our sports curriculum is broad and balanced, encouraging participation from everyone, at all levels.

And there is a wide choice of co-curricular sports for those who want to try something new.

A competitive spirit

As part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, we take part in a number of GDST tournaments, competing with our sister schools across the country. Gymnastics, cross-country, netball, hockey, tennis, rounders, athletics, golf, swimming and cricket are just some of the competitions our girls take part in – within the GDST network and more widely in national schools’ competitions, local leagues and against other schools in the Hampshire area.

Outstanding Facilities

Our sporting facilities are superb, with a fully-equipped Sport England standard sports hall and all-weather multi-use sports pitch and netball/tennis courts.

With the University of Portsmouth, we co-own some of the best sports facilities in the area, including four floodlit courts (for a variety of sports), a synthetic turf pitch for hockey and football, and a grass athletics track. We also have access to the university sports halls and fitness suites, along with a swimming pool, synthetic turf pitch and athletics track which we hire from HMS Temeraire.

Sports Tours

Sports tours are a regular highlight of our sporting calendar, offering girls the challenge of playing in a different culture and climate, against new and talented players. The latest hockey and netball tour saw a squad of 32 girls setting off for Barbados to experience, all of whom returned freshly invigorated and passionate about their sport.

Sports Scholarships

We award sports scholarships on merit to girls entering the senior school. Candidates are expected to show outstanding skills in a range of sporting activities, and a strong sense of team spirit. They will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills with an ability to motivate others, and a real passion and commitment to their sport.
