DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD
What will it do for me?
At Portsmouth High School, girls embark on a journey through three progressive levels, Bronze, Silver, and Gold, each offering unique challenges and opportunities.
Participation in the award builds confidence, strengthens self-esteem, and fosters resilience. It requires dedication, persistence, and commitment, and leaves a lasting impression on the attitudes and outlook of every young person who takes part. The DofE Award is widely respected by universities and employers, making it a valuable addition to any CV or personal statement.
How do I achieve it?
To achieve an award, girls complete a personalised programme across four key sections:
- Volunteering – giving back through unpaid service to individuals or the community.
- Physical – improving in a sport, dance, or fitness activity.
- Skills – developing practical, creative, or social skills and personal interests.
- Expedition – planning, training for, and completing an adventurous journey in the UK.
Where are the expeditions?
At Portsmouth High School, Bronze and Silver expeditions take advantage of our stunning local countryside, with journeys through the South Downs, New Forest, and the Isle of Purbeck. For the Gold Award, students venture further afield to more challenging terrains in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, offering unforgettable experiences and deeper personal growth.
How old do I have to be?
As a Directly Licensed Centre, Portsmouth High School is authorised to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh Award independently. The programme is introduced at the end of Year 8, with students beginning Bronze in Year 9, progressing to Silver in Year 10, and Gold in Year 12. The award is extremely popular, with around 100 pupils participating each year, reflecting its value and the enthusiasm it inspires.
