MEET OUR GIRLS
Isabella
My name is Isabella, and I joined Portsmouth High School in Year 7, ever since, I have thrived amongst all the incredible opportunities this school has offered me.
Amongst the wide variety of school subjects offered at PHS, I have always enjoyed sciences, and biology in particular. The engaging lessons have sparked my curiosity and deepened my understanding of the world around me. I have extended this by regularly attending the school Eco club, where I enjoy expanding my knowledge of the environment and climate change. English has boosted my creativity and developed my communication skills, allowing me to further this by competing with my peers in debating competitions such as Youth Speaks.
In my first year at PHS, I joined the school netball club, and with this, I have been invited on several exciting sports trips, and I have taken part in many more sporting events which have taught me the value of teamwork and inclusivity. Within school, there are also many opportunities to learn leadership; for me this came as being a form captain, allowing me to express my opinions, as well as putting forward the views of others.
Recently, I have also been given the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh awards. This has pushed me to help out more in my local community and I have gained valuable skills that will help prepare me for future challenges.
I am looking forward to the challenges Year 11 will bring. PHS has such a welcoming atmosphere, and I have built lasting friendships. The countless opportunities in and outside the classroom has grown my confidence and prepared me in every way for the future.
Katherine
Year 7 was a big learning curve for me. At the start, it was a bit overwhelming – trying to find my way around a much bigger school, getting used to all the different teachers, and managing a packed timetable. I struggled a bit with speaking up in class and trying new things, but I slowly started getting more confident. One thing that really helped was the bonding trip we went on. We did loads of activities that helped us work together and get to know each other better—it made school feel less scary. Looking back, I’m proud of how much I’ve grown and everything I’ve managed to achieve in Year 7.
Mara
My name is Mara and I joined Portsmouth High School in Year 5. What I love about the school the most is the people and the atmosphere they create. Having such a close community of students across different years, and approachable teachers, helps to make the school a place that I want to be. Every day people will smile or greet you around the school which creates a welcoming and joyful atmosphere.
My favourite subject is drama because I think it is the best way to convey a story or message by showing it visually and drama has the ability to control the thoughts and feelings of the audience. I love being able to fully immerse myself in different stories and characters. Most importantly, the lessons are really fun!
When I first joined the school, I was a lot more shy and introverted. Through a supportive school community, and becoming more motivated to learn, I slowly gained more confidence to reach the point I am at now. As well as this, the school constantly offers different opportunities, which has allowed me to personally grow through stepping out of my comfort zone.
Currently I am still exploring career options, but I do have a few areas of interest, such as: theatre and creative arts, media, history, business and marketing, hospitality and tourism as well as education, psychology and sociology. Most importantly, I want to be able to make a positive difference in people’s lives as well as achieving personal happiness and satisfaction.
Pushing yourself to the limit
‘I believe in myself and, when I do believe in myself, I can go far. It would be amazing to represent England in the Olympics…’
