Heart shaped memorial with pink roses

The Alisha Zaman Memorial Awards

The Alisha Zaman Memorial Awards have been established by annual donations from the family of the late Alisha Jenni Zaman (1999-2020), a former student at Portsmouth High School (2004-2017), in loving memory of her time and growing up as a student from Year 1 to Year 13. The awards are inspired by Alisha’s wish to give something back to her school where she passed her childhood and early adulthood.

A former Sixth Form Scholar (2015-17), Alisha was academically bright and immensely talented in creative art and music. She was passionately involved in many co-curricular activities such as drama, national citizen service, and voluntary work for Oxfam, CRY, RSPCA, Greyhound Gap, Footprints, and also in fundraising for charities (including the Breast Cancer Haven) and for shelters and sanctuaries for vulnerable animals. She was a holder of the ITAE Taekwondo Black Belt while still at Portsmouth High School (Year 9), and a recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards (Bronze and Silver) besides many others. She was universally popular amongst her peers and a loyal friend to many, and was always generous with her time in various school activities and to help her fellow students.

The Alisha Zaman Memorial Sixth Form Talent Scholarship

This award is worth £250 for each of the two years in the Sixth Form at Portsmouth High School. While the selection of the award will be primarily based on the outstanding academic excellence of the scholar, the following matters will also be considered in the decision-making by the Head and senior leadership.
● Participation in co-curricular activities
● Contribution to the life of the school
● Attendance, punctuality, attitude and conduct
● Promotion of diversity where possible

I am honoured to have been chosen to receive this scholarship in memory of Alisha Zaman. I am hugely privileged to be a part of Portsmouth High School and receiving this scholarship deepens that privilege. I will do my utmost to ensure the family’s generosity is not wasted.

Thank you so much to the family.

Alisha Zaman Memorial Scholarship 2022 - Sydney

A year on, it is still an honour to have been awarded with The Alisha Zaman Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship has helped me with buying course books, and travel expenses to various university open days. These universities have really emphasised the importance of student welfare and the support that should be available.

I am thankful for the support that Portsmouth High has provided from the well-being centre in Daffodil House, where there is a lovely memorial in Alisha’s name. The investment that the school has made, has been, and will be, so beneficial to students who need that extra support.

I was genuinely surprised when I heard I’d received this prize. I’m so grateful to my teachers and parents for their support and encouragement. Art is all I’ve ever wanted to do and PHS have helped me enormously to develop my skills. I didn’t know Alisha but I’ve read about how bubbly, kind and funny she was.

Her memory lives on through this prize and I’m deeply honoured to receive this recognition.

I am incredibly honoured and surprised to have received this award. I honestly didn’t think I would ever achieve something like this, let alone win an award for it. As the artist whenever I look at my own work, the only thing I see are the flaws, it’s heart warming to know that others think my work is worth acknowledgment.

Thank you again for giving me this award, it means the world to me.

It was an honour to receive the Art prize in Alisha Zaman’s memory. The trophy itself took pride of place on our windowsill, but it was the sentiment of the prize that meant the most. It really encouraged me to further and deepen my studies and grow my interest in art throughout my time in Year 12. Many thanks to the donors.
