Online learning at Portsmouth High Junior School
Our virtual learning environment, Firefly, is now in the second term of use by Year 3 and above. We have plans to extend to Year 1 and 2 in the near future and Nursery and Reception are enjoying the use of Tapestry, their online learning journal.
Teachers have been exploring Firefly and, as with any tool of this nature, skill improves with use. Mr Barrett is at the forefront and the girls in his classes are becoming experts in using the environment. In the English area he has developed Room 34, a magical place that the girls need to check regularly. Only certain girls will find work there as Mr Barratt can manipulate which individuals see certain tasks. This is a fantastic way of targeting specific areas for them to improve upon and giving them responsibility for their own learning. This, along with his reading BLOGS and writing workshops, is very popular.
On the mathematics pages there are many videos from my BLOG and other areas of the internet. These give valuable revision opportunities and a way of discovering the techniques we use at the junior school.
Geography holds several activities for the “where in the world challenge”, French has videos and activities on each year group’s current topic, and Mr Rahman’s super science BLOG sits in the science pages. These are just a few highlights and there are many more places to explore. If your daughter has not yet shown you the site I would urge you to take a look.
Junior girls showed their grit and determination on Wednesday as they took part in the Westbourne House cross country, performing well despite the cold and mud. There was an under 11 netball match against PGS at school and other girls were also out playing hockey at the same time. The quantity and variety of sport at the school is impressive and all of our girls are applying themselves extremely well.
